I've always enjoyed this song, it's hard not to.
From that gentle introduction full of aching heartbreak laden over a soft guitar, to the way it builds, and builds, and builds, before finally unleashing that glorious solo, the kind of epic guitar assault that causes your heart to skip several beats, the jaw to drop open and the head to rock out hard.
Yes, Free Bird is an awesome song, a belief that was further cemented in my mind the first time I saw the Rob Zombie film The Devil's Rejects.
I don't want to give anything away for anybody who hasn't seen that film, but all I will say is that the use of this song helped me decide on the first of my golden rules that I would definitely implement if I ever became Ultimate President of the Entire Universe, which is this:
All films should end with somebody driving down the highway to Free Bird.
The even cooler part? I last summer I actually got to drive down a dark Minnesota highway in the early hours of the morning with Free Bird blasting out through the car stereo. It was, as you can imagine, quite awesome.
Anyway, here's the song. Please enjoy.
