At the start of the year, I was sent a truck-load of CDs to review. Some, like Massive Attack's HeligoLand (the perfect soundtrack for those times when you just want to relax and nod off), I've listened to at least several times a week, every week since January.
Others, sadly, are yet to leave their cases. This upsets me, because I bet there's a whole bunch of good stuff in there, but I seem to have found myself dealing with all kinds of other music-related projects lately, all of which take me away from the sheer joy of listening to some great new tunes.
The first project concerns the new Tuned In series of gigs taking place at Haigh Hall this summer. McFly and The Saturdays have been confirmed, and some other acts will be soon enough, and it's all wonderful and exciting.
Some big company are working on a full website, but until then I was asked to put something together. So I did, and it's here: www.wlct.org/concerts
As basic as it might be [homepage, FAQ and a map], I'm actually pretty pleased with it.
At the same time as all this was happening, I was also asked to help get some bands together to supply tracks for a soundtrack to some audio/visual spectacular to be featured at the new Museum of Wigan Life [rumours that this 'museum' is just a box with a pie in it have yet to be confirmed]. So I did that too, though because nobody ever tells me anything unless they absolutely have to, I have no idea where that's up to.
Then, through no fault of my own, I found myself agreeing to host, and help organise, a night of live music on March 29th in Swinley.
It's been about five years since I last organised any kind of gig, and even though I'm spending a lot of time desperately trying to remember how to do it, I'm actually quite excited about the whole thing. I'll be posting more info on this soon, but I will say for now that there's a bunch of really good young bands on the bill, with me spouting various bits of gibberish down the microphone in between sets.
I'll be honest, I thought hosting a gig would be the most random and unexpected thing to happen to me this year, but then I agreed to take up singing lessons with my old friend Ian, and I'm fairly confident that nothing I ever do in life again will be as weird as that.
Haigh Fest 2010 is happening, before anyone asks.
And finally, no blog about music would be complete without some actual music, so here's the utterly-amazing Mrs. Potter's Lullaby by Counting Crows. I love this song. You should too.
